Adidas Hoop Challenge Report May 18-20, 2007Cleveland, Ohio Prepared by Rob Taylor Publisher, Buckeye Prep Report |
For the 12th consecutive year, Mike Duncan, Director of the Ohio Basketball Club, held his Annual Adidas Hoop Challenge tournament in the suburban Cleveland, Ohio area. The tournament consisted of four divisions from U-14 through U-17 and was held at Garfield Heights High School and Ohio Nets. Although the majority of the 58 teams were from Northern Ohio, there was good representation from New York, Michigan, West Virginia and Indiana. One of the best games of the tournament was the U-17 championship game between the Ohio Basketball Club and Indy Heat Magic. In the first half of that game, a scuffle broke out resulting in the expulsion of three players, two from OBC (Devon Moore and Yancy Gates) and one player from the Indy Heat Magic. Already suffering from a short bench with the departure of B.J. Mullins (was seen playing with King James in Columbus) and Anthony McBride (injury), OBC was forced to finish the last two minutes of the game with only four players, after their fifth player fouled out. As soon as OBC’s fifth player went to the bench, Indy Heat turned up the heat and whittled a double digit lead to as low as two points, while forcing OBC’s bigs to finish free throws. The U-14 championship game between the Ohio Basketball Club and Flint Affiliation started off with a little drama, as there was some initial player eligibility questions about two of Flint’s addition. Players in question were Patrick Lucas Perry and Christian Vaughn, who had been competing with the U-15 Michigan Mustangs during the tournament. After both players were cleared to play (they are both age eligible and Lucas-Perry in an 8th grader), the stage was set for an “Ohio versus Michigan” showdown. Actually, the game was a rematch of an earlier pool play match-up that went down to the wire. Eventually, OBC, who was playing without their two starting post players, pulled out a three-point victory. Both Perry and Vaughn played in that game and were factors in a very close contest. In the championship game, OBC jumped out in front and never really looked back. OBC established their dominance in the post early with Devon Cottrell, Paul Hogniford and Rakim Reed going to work in the paint. However, Stevie Taylor’s game-high 25 points was the big difference in the game. The leading scorers for Flint Affiliation were Patrick Lucas-Perry who finished with a team-high 15 points and Raymond Arrington with 10 points.
